Yesterday I helped a very valued customer set up an online forum for his website. The website is aimed at self employed people and business owners. The aim of the website is to provide an open forum and free exchange of ideas on business issues in Wales. I would like to wish Business Development Wales all the best, and hope the new website will become a success. www.businessdevelopmentwales.org

The summer brings hot sunny days, great for BBQs and going to the beach, but not so good for computer equipment. Within the last week I have replaced a UPS, Raid Controller, Nasbox Server, and a network switch, all due to over-heating.

Tips to avoid over-heating computer equipment during the summer.

  • Air conditioning. If you can’t get an air conditioning unit installed, pick up a small portable unit, to reduce the temperature of the air in a room.
  • Ventilation. Try and open a window if you can, but be careful to ensure that nobody can get in (or out) of the window, use fans to direct the new cool air towards the equipment.
  • De-clutter. Clutter stops air circulating in a room
  • Remote admin. Turn off monitors connected to remote servers and use remote services if possible.
  • Switch off. If you have many computers in a room, turn off the ones you don’t use, this will save energy, and reduce the amount of heat generated.
  • PC Maintenance. Use an air duster to clean the grills of your equipment, spray from the inside out to avoid getting dust inside the case, also clean off any heatsinks, and make sure you put the case back on, the case will direct airflow to the correct components.

Recently there has been an outbreak of an annoying autorun based virus, which has targeted USB/Flash drives.

The virus hides in the USB/Flash drive’s recycle folder, and created a reference to itself in the autorun file. You can remove this virus by…

  1. Open the autorun file (you will need to enable hidden file & protected file view to see the autorun file).
  2. Note the reference of the virus file.
  3. Delete the autorun file, and create a new empty one.
  4. Delete the virus file from the location you noted in step 2.

Alternatively I have added an application to the downloads section, that will do this for you. Flash Disinfector deals with this virus automatically.

Visit the download page to download Flash Disinfector.

After spending the last 12+ years fixing computers in the Merthyr Tydfil area I have created this site (www.merthyrcomputers.co.uk) to provide free help and advice to keeping your computer running as smooth as the day you bought it.
