The summer brings hot sunny days, great for BBQs and going to the beach, but not so good for computer equipment. Within the last week I have replaced a UPS, Raid Controller, Nasbox Server, and a network switch, all due to over-heating.

Tips to avoid over-heating computer equipment during the summer.

  • Air conditioning. If you can’t get an air conditioning unit installed, pick up a small portable unit, to reduce the temperature of the air in a room.
  • Ventilation. Try and open a window if you can, but be careful to ensure that nobody can get in (or out) of the window, use fans to direct the new cool air towards the equipment.
  • De-clutter. Clutter stops air circulating in a room
  • Remote admin. Turn off monitors connected to remote servers and use remote services if possible.
  • Switch off. If you have many computers in a room, turn off the ones you don’t use, this will save energy, and reduce the amount of heat generated.
  • PC Maintenance. Use an air duster to clean the grills of your equipment, spray from the inside out to avoid getting dust inside the case, also clean off any heatsinks, and make sure you put the case back on, the case will direct airflow to the correct components.
